The surprise was spoiled by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which published patent images of one of Renault’s most anticipated new products two months before the presentation, scheduled for February 2024. The Renault 5 is an affordable electric hatchback whose name and appearance are a nod to the R5 from the 1970s. As expected, the production version differs little from the concept of the same name, which debuted in 2021.

According to Carscoops, which discovered images of the production model in the WIPO database, Renault 5 claims to be one of the most affordable electric cars on the European market – it will cost about 25 thousand euros (2.4 million rubles at today’s exchange rate). It will be based on the AmpR Small platform, previously known as the CMF-B EV, and on a single charge of a 52-kilowatt-hour battery, the electric hatch will travel about 400 kilometers.

The electric car will also have unusual solutions. For example, support for V2G technology, with the help of which excess energy can be sent back to the main power grid.

As for the exterior design, the Renault 5 retains the form factor of its predecessor: it has five doors (the rear door handles are located on the pillars), flared wheel arches a la the R5 Turbo, and the taillights act as an extension of the side panels of the body, which reduces turbulence and improves overall aerodynamics. There’s a 5-shaped battery charge indicator built into the hood, where the original R5 had an air intake. Renault recently used a similar feature on a prototype of the new Twingo: a three-section indicator was placed on its hood.

The public debut of the Renault 5 – the full model name Renault 5 E-Tech electric – will take place at the Geneva Motor Show on February 26, 2024. The exhibition will be held in the Swiss city in the same format and will mark 100 years since the first show.
