Elon Musk said during a recent visit to China that he wants to test a full self-driving, or FSD, system in China, Tesla’s second most important market after the United States. He intends to use cars with FSD as taxis. According to Chinese sources cited by China Daily, the local government is ready to support this project.

Chinese authorities have welcomed Tesla’s idea to “conduct some robotaxi trials in the country” and also expressed hope that it will set a good example for others.

However, they have not yet given permission for the widespread use of FSD. In addition, before this, permission has yet to be obtained to collect and transmit data that is necessary for smart systems. The issue was not discussed in detail during Musk’s trip to China, the sources said.

Previously, Musk said that Tesla will present its robotaxi on August 8 – a concept that the company has been working on for several years.

China has previously made it clear that it is open to companies developing advanced technologies that can be tested in the country for mutual benefit. Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Li Qiang called Tesla’s work “a successful example of Sino-American trade and economic cooperation.”

Meanwhile, Tesla sales in China are falling. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), demand for electric cars built at the local gigafactory fell 18 percent year-on-year in April to 62,000 vehicles. At the same time, local brands are strengthening their position: BYD, for example, sold 312 thousand cars – one and a half times more than in April 2023.
