Tuners made a “copy” of Smart ForTwo from the Soviet S-3AM

The iconic S-3AM motorized stroller, popularly nicknamed “Morgunovka,” has been on the lips of fans of Soviet automobile classics for more than half a century, although its production ceased in 1970. From time to time, car enthusiasts implement restyling projects for the iconic Morgunovka, giving it a new life.

One of these ambitious projects was presented by the MNE Custom Atelier workshop. Enthusiasts transformed the old Morgunovka into a real hi-tech car, equipping it with an 80-horsepower engine, modern suspension and futuristic design.

The original S-3AM motorized strollers were equipped with weak IZH-49 motorcycle engines with 7 “horses”. With a total car weight of 425 kg, this gave a depressing 53 kg for each “horsepower”. Acceleration to the stated 60 km/h seemed unrealistic, and climbing hills was out of the question.

The tuners were faced with the task of preserving the unique design of the legendary Morgunovka and at the same time ridding it of the shortcomings of the Soviet era. The only way is to completely replace the outdated filling with minimal intervention in the appearance. The modern Smart ForTwo was chosen as a donor.

As a result of the rework, the car received a new suspension from Smart. A unique frame was developed and manufactured, thanks to which the proportions of the car slightly changed, and the body became 12 centimeters wider. This gave the Morgunovka a resemblance to the classic Zhuk.

Instead of a low-power unit, the car was equipped with a 0.8-liter Smart ForTwo turbo engine, developing 80 “horses” – 8 times more than the original. This engine has a start-stop system that turns off the engine when idling. It is paired with a 5-speed “robot”. Now the updated “Morgunka” is able to reach speeds of up to 140 km/h.

Unique power and cooling systems were developed for the project. And ABS and ESP gave the “smartgun” a modern level of safety. (photo: m_n_e_custom)
