At the beginning of 2024, the official premiere of the updated GR Yaris hot hatchback, equipped for the first time with an 8-speed automatic transmission, took place. The new modification is designed to expand the audience of the model and, it seems, the version turned out to be quite successful, since the Japanese automaker is now thinking about creating a two-pedal version of the larger “hot hatch” GR Corolla – because there is a demand for such a modification of the car.

Toyota Australia head of sales and marketing Sean Hanley said more than half of GR86 and Supra buyers opt for an automatic transmission. And he added that “the data suggests that people would choose the same GR Corolla if it were available.”

Toyota Gazoo Racing President Tomoya Takahashi hinted that such a modification will appear soon, since there is indeed customer demand for the GR Corolla with an automatic transmission.

Since the models are equipped with the same three-cylinder 1.6 petrol turbo engine and all-wheel drive, it is most likely that the larger hatchback will borrow from its compact brother the 8-speed Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission, which the Japanese brand’s specialists created specifically for the GR Yaris. But the timing of the appearance of the two-pedal GR Corolla has not yet been announced.
