The ban, introduced in May 2021 “due to unfriendly actions against the Belarusian people,” has been extended until the end of 2024. Interfax reports this with reference to the relevant resolution of the Council of Ministers, published on the National Legal Internet Portal. In addition to Skoda, the list of prohibited brands includes Liqui Moly (oils and lubricants), Nivea (skin care products) and others.

The ban on the supply and sale in Belarus of goods of a number of foreign companies, including the Czech automaker Skoda, was introduced after they refused to sponsor the World Hockey Championship if it were held in the country – the reason was the political situation in the Republic of Belarus after the 2020 presidential elections . The government decree explains the ban as follows: “to ensure the protection of national interests, taking into account unfriendly actions against the Belarusian people.” The new regulation comes into force on November 5, 2023.

It is worth noting that the ban does not apply to goods imported for personal use, as well as cars or other vehicles registered in the EAEU countries.

Belarus also has a presidential decree “On the Application of Special Measures”: the import and sale of goods whose country of origin is a state that has applied sanctions against Belarusian companies or individuals is prohibited. Such products and the companies that sell them are included in the list approved by the government.
