A photo of the LT4 engine intended for the final Camaro ZL1 coupe was circulated on social networks. The power unit was photographed at a plant in Kentucky along with General Motors mechanics. The photo is captioned “the end of an era,” because the era of the Chevrolet Camaro will end in January 2024. It is not yet known which car will be the very last: it will probably be sold at auction.

The LT4 eight-cylinder engine first appeared in the C7 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 in 2015. Then the power unit was added to the Cadillac CTS-V, and it was installed under the hood of the Camaro ZL1 only in 2017. The key difference between the Corvette option is the dry sump lubrication system. The CTS-V and Camaro ZL1 use a simplified traditional design.

Nevertheless, the output is impressive: the Camaro ZL1 produces 659 horsepower and 881 Nm of torque! Probably, the monstrous engine will be installed on the last coupe of the Collector’s Edition series with serial number 350. However, complete oblivion of the V8 LT4 is not yet in danger: the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing supersedans and Cadillac Escalade-V SUVs are not going to retire.

In the final months before retirement, sales of the Chevrolet Camaro more than doubled. And next year, only the Ford Mustang will remain in the once popular pony car segment, as the Dodge Challenger has also been retired without a gas-powered successor.
