According to Bloomberg, at the end of 2023, the Chinese brand may surpass the American corporation in the number of battery-powered cars sold. According to official documents, in the third quarter of this year the gap between Tesla and BYD narrowed to a historic low. At the same time, Elon Musk explains the current situation with a production pause, which includes downtime at a plant in Shanghai.

In the third quarter of 2023, Tesla sold 435,059 electric vehicles. Compared to the second quarter, sales decreased by approximately 30,000 vehicles. At the same time, the flagship Model S and Model Y accounted for less than 16,000 sales.

The current situation has allowed the Chinese company BYD to almost catch up with Elon Musk’s company in terms of the number of electric vehicles sold. The Chinese concern shipped 431,603 models to customers in the third quarter, narrowing the gap with Tesla to 0.8 percent. At the same time, in terms of growth rate, BYD increased its sales year-on-year by 67 percent. For an American corporation, this figure is 26.5 percent. A similar situation has developed in the segment of hybrid cars.

Tesla management explained the delay by a production pause, which is associated with the suspension of the Shanghai and Texas Gigafactories. While in China engineers are preparing to produce a new generation Model 3, in the USA Tesla is still setting up the assembly of the Cybertruck electric pickup truck. At the same time, by the end of the year the American company plans to sell 1.8 million electric cars.

The day before, Tesla updated the Model Y electric crossover. The model received changes in design, and also became faster and longer-range.
