The head of the American branch of the brand, Tom Donnelly, told Automotive News that production and sales of the new CX-70 model will start only in 2024. The original plan was to make a presentation, start building and open for submissions sometime in 2023. The reasons for the delay are not reported, but new details about the Mazda CX-70 are known: we are talking about a 5.1-meter hybrid crossover.

Mazda has confirmed that the CX-70 will be a two-row model with the same body style as the large CX-90 crossover. The fundamental difference comes down to the interior layout. An electrified power plant is announced for the new product: we are probably talking about a plug-in hybrid system based on a 2.5 engine.

The unification of the Mazda CX-90 and CX-70 means that both models will share a promising rear-wheel drive platform with a longitudinal engine arrangement. The key market for the Seventy will be North America. Mazda has high hopes for crossovers: by 2025, annual sales should reach half a million units, while this year the target is 350 thousand units.

There is reason for optimism: in September, the Mazda CX-90 sold 4.7 thousand copies, which means the new product is already more successful than its predecessor, the CX-9. However, the main bestsellers remain front-wheel drive models created around an older platform, and the CX-5 is the permanent sales leader.
